Hi, I’m Carol Ross. The concept of A Bigger Voice came to me while driving home after dropping off the kids at school. In a matter of seconds, I knew that this was my work to do for a lifetime. I knew it not just intellectually, but emotionally and physically. A visceral feeling, that brought me to tears.
In the time that it took me to go from school to home, I made sense of my life’s experiences with three small words, day-dreamed into consciousness. “A bigger voice.”
I’ve worked hard to have a bigger voice. And I want it for others.
Have you ever run into people who say something remarkable, something they’ve learned from experience, that stops you in your tracks? I have. And I usually think that others could benefit from hearing that wisdom. But what often happens is that it’s a one-off conversation, a conversation with a neighbor or a friend. And it never goes further than that. I’ve run into a lot of people who have remarkable, world-changing wisdom—about using the principles of improvisation to live better lives, about applying experiences as a monk in the business world, about changing the system of organ donations to save lives. These are people who want to see their ideas grow exponentially to help others.
I created A Bigger Voice to help innovators with remarkable wisdom create stunning results and sustainability. This blog is for people who believe in doing good and doing well. If you have a compelling vision and the
passion to make it real but haven’t yet figured out how to get from
point A to point B, you just might want to bookmark this site. Or better yet, subscribe to the RSS feed.
There are many ways to learn. One of the most powerful ways is by doing, moving into action. In the spring of 2008, I started a pilot with four consultants who are now also bloggers for A Bigger Voice. This blog will reflect what we learned in working with our pilot clients, including:
* A middle-aged woman who works as a coordinator for a food bank serving eight counties in Michigan. Rose turned a history of abuse and neglect into a powerful story of transformation and redemption. She is committed to ensuring that no child ever experiences what she did growing up.
* A former professor and consultant who speaks of “organizational mis-behavior” in terms of how we miss opportunities to communicate at a deeper level, to fully receive what is offered. Jeannie is passionate about changing the way we interact, so that our human spirit can thrive in workplaces.
* Two brothers, one a freelance sports writer and author, the other a small business development consultant, who found their shared values embodied in a defunct professional basketball team, the Buffalo Braves. Tim and Chris, who grew up in Buffalo, NY, want the story of this team to lead to a larger discussion, about loyalty, pride and hard work, about humility and what the past has to teach us, in a way that only sports can do.
We’ll not only be blogging as commentators and observers, but also as participants in the process of blogging to create a community. We’ll also have occasional guest bloggers weighing in. And of course, the conversation isn’t complete without your voice. Please make this a many-to-many conversation by adding your comments.
If you are new to this blog, take a moment to check out Roadmap to A Bigger Voice. It will give you our view of the “secret sauce,” the principles and model behind A Bigger Voice. It will also help connect the dots between topics that may seem disparate at first, but are part of larger framework.
